Celebrating ten years of Photojos Photography!

I can’t quite believe I’m writing this, but I’ll soon be celebrating the tenth anniversary of Photojos Photography! Yes, I’ve been a professional portrait photographer now for a decade. And those ten years have literally flown by!

You may already know my story. But if not, I setup my photography business after being a midwife here in Liverpool for over twenty years. I must have delivered more than 1000 newborn babies in my time as a midwife!

Truth is, I adored being a midwife and helping to bring so many gorgeous little babies into the world. But the interest I had in photography – actually since I was a teenager – just kept nagging away at me.

So it was ten years ago, in September 2007, that I finally decided to go for it and to start up a portrait photography business of my own!

Starting my portrait photography business

Starting my portrait photography business was the best decision I ever made!

They say time flies when you’re having fun. Well, I have literally loved every minute and yes, the time has flown!

What am I most proud of after ten years of Photojos Photography?

  • Lovely clients

I’ve been lucky enough to have worked for so many lovely clients over the past ten years.

It is no exaggeration to say that I am extremely grateful for all my wonderful clients over the past ten years. Without them (you know who you are!), I wouldn’t be here today celebrating ten years of Photojos Photography.

I am also very proud to have become the preferred portrait photographer for Liverpool-based footballers and celebrities including Wayne and Coleen Rooney (and am unbelievably excited about the news that they are expecting another baby!).

  • A new custom-designed studio and a growing team!

As my client base has grown, so too has my studio!

I started ten years ago by photographing babies in my client’s homes. Then five years ago setup my very first photography studio in central Liverpool. It was small but perfectly formed, and I loved having a dedicated space where I could do my work and create beautiful portraits for my clients.

I outgrew the studio within a few years though and moved to a larger space two years ago.

The Photojos Photography studio space is my happy place. I have the room I need to create an exceptional client experience and just love going everyday to photograph clients or do my photo editing.

I also welcomed Jan, my assistant, to the Photojos Photography team back in March this year, and this was an exciting turning point in the business.

With her onboard, I have the hands-on support in the studio that I need during photoshoots and she is a great help when it comes to setting up and closing down the studio and managing the day-to-day tasks.

  • Qualifications & Awards

Thanks to the ongoing support of my trainer and mentor Damian McGillicuddy, in the past ten years I have gained many professional photography qualifications. This has included my Fellowship of the Societies of Wedding & Portrait Photographers, which is actually the highest qualification a professional photographer can achieve.

And I have won a number of international awards including two prestigious ‘Photographer of the Year’ titles. Again, thanks to the guidance and support of Damian who really has challenged and pushed me over the past few years.

These qualifications and awards have been personal highlights, but I believe that they also give my clients the peace of mind that my work is of an extremely high standard. They definitely help me to attract the type of clients who want to invest in high-quality portrait photography.

Another highlight of recent years is that I have had my work featured in many magazines and newspapers and even been on local TV. This has all helped to boost my profile and to attract new clients.

Becoming a judge for the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers

I’ve officially become a judge for the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP) – a worldwide organisation for serious photographers. Woo! So from now on, just call me Judge Jocelyn, lol!

But seriously, it’s a great achievement. I am so proud and delighted to now be a fully-fledged judge – one of just 34 in the UK – and there are lots of benefits for you too.

International photography award news!

Before Christmas I shared with you that I was in the running for two ‘Photographer of the Year’ awards with The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP); I was a finalist in two categories – ‘Avant Garde’ and ‘Bump to Baby’ photography.

The awards dinner was held at the weekend, as part of the SWPP’s annual international convention, and so I am thrilled to be able to now share with you my great news.

And the award goes to…

[Drumroll please!] … “Jocelyn Conway of Photojos Photography”!

Yes, I won the Bump to Baby category and was named The SWPP’s ‘Bump to Baby Photographer of the Year 2015’! I still can’t believe it!

Against such strong competition and literally thousands of entries from professional maternity and baby photographers across the UK, my photograph of these gorgeous baby triplets was chosen as the best of them all.

This is a massive, massive win for me!

The judges said that my triplet portrait, which won me the award, was: “Beautifully lit, subtle colours, even skin tones, good composition, excellent use of the fabric with care and attention to detail with the difficulty of getting three babies to sleep at once. Well done!”

Plus the awards didn’t stop there.

I came third in the ‘Avant Garde’ category, AND I was a finalist in the 20”x16” print competition as well – a triple win!

I had such an amazing time at the event this year and loved being able to celebrate with my family, colleagues and friends.

It was a fantastic, slightly surreal night. Suffice to say we celebrated until the early hours!

An outstanding year

So, now it’s a few days since the award ceremony I’ve had time to reflect on what helped to make 2015 such an outstanding year for me and Photojos Photography.

Winning the Photographer of the Year title in the maternity, newborn and baby category, the most highly contested category of them all, I believe is testament to a number of things.

Firstly, with guidance from my wonderful mentor – the amazing Damian McGillicuddy (the world’s only Grand Master Double Bar photographer) – I continued to learn, experiment and develop my photography style.

Plus, quality was my number one priority.

I continued to work really hard to ensure that my fine-art style photography was the best it could possibly be. To me that means creating a portrait that is unique and beautiful and of the highest possible professional standard.

I strive to create pieces of art that my clients will proudly display on their walls at home and treasure for a lifetime.

Heartfelt thanks

So, after a wonderful award-winning weekend, I’d like to once again reiterate my grateful thanks to everyone who has supported me in the past year; to my wonderful family and friends, to Damian McGillicuddy, to the SWPP and the Jones family who organised this fantastic event, to the award judges who gave me such lovely feedback, and also to my clients – whom without none of this would have been achieved.

This time last year I was celebrating after winning ‘Pictorial and Fine Art Photographer of the Year 2014’.

To follow that up this year with a second Photographer of the Year title is just wonderful.

Now I’m raring to get stuck into 2016 and can’t wait to see what this year has in store!
Until next time,

2015: Reflections on an outstanding year for Photojos Photography

Hello and Merry Christmas to you!

As the end of 2015 draws near and as I am celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary (which I’m celebrating today, Christmas Eve), I’m in a reflective mood. So I thought I’d share with you some of the highlights of my year.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge and heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who has been part of the Photojos Photography journey in 2015.

An award-winning year

This year has been utterly fantastic! It started with my winning ‘Pictorial and Fine Art Photographer of the Year’ with The Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers (SWPP); a huge achievement! It was amazing to be chosen from among so many hundreds of talented photographers. A real WOW moment for me!

Fine art Photographer of the Year

Fine Art Photographer of the Year

I’ve also continued to win several Gold awards for my portraits throughout the year from the SWPP and other photographic organisations.

I certainly strive to create beautiful ‘fine art’ portraiture of the highest possible quality and I believe this is what sets me apart. But I was still completely stunned and delighted to have found out earlier this month that I have been nominated for the second time in a row for the SWPP ‘Photographer of the Year’ award!

This time I’m, being considered in two categories; ‘Bump to Baby’ and ‘Portrait Avant Garde’! Winners will be announced in January – I will keep you posted!

New services and new studio

2015 was also a year in which I experimented with new things.

I launched my ‘Bump Bowls’ maternity cast service in the spring which, I’m delighted to say, has been a huge hit. And shortly afterwards I trademarked the term ‘Bump Bowls’. The publicity following the launch was a lovely boost to the business and word of mouth referrals have also generated lots of interest from mums-to-be. I’ve now completed my 75th Bump Bowl, and am so thrilled that so many of you are loving the new service.

This year I also expanded into my gorgeous new central-Liverpool studio (read more about it here). While I’m in the same building as before, I now have lots more space, a lighter and brighter studio to work in, plus dedicated areas for clients and my growing prop collection!

Celebrity Clients

It’s been lovely, once again, to work for Colleen Rooney who is expecting her third child with husband Wayne. I have photographed all their babies as newborns and have done several family photoshoots for them over the years. Recently I photographed the family again and did some maternity portraits for Colleen and a bump bowl for her. Such a lovely family!

I have also now worked for several other professional footballers and their families. Three Liverpool FC players have been into my studio recently, and I’m delighted to be attracting business among these circles because – quite frankly – they could go to any professional photographer of their choice for their portraits, but ultimately they chose me! Yey!

Nine years in business

Since establishing PhotoJos Photography in 2007, I have had the pleasure of taking the portrait of hundreds of pregnant ladies, newborn babies, children and growing families. Now, as 2016 approaches and as I enter my ninth year in business, I’m looking forward to even more exciting times, with you and your family at the heart of everything I do.
